Comparing Weather

We're sixth graders from Cordell and we enjoy playing soccer. We chose our project after hearing about it from our science teacher. We chose this topic because we wanted to see how the weather would compare taken from two different places at the same time with the Mesonet data from Bessie.

We took readings in Cordell, east of Cordell, and at the Bessie Mesonet station to compare. We measured wind speed with a borrowed anemometer, wind direction with a windsock we made, temperature with a thermometer, and figured wind chill using a chart. We took readings at 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. for two days.

Our readings were different from each other and the Bessie tower. Temperature is affected by surfaces such as concrete or grass. Wind is affected by anything that will slow or stop it. One day it was too warm and still for a wind chill reading. We learned that a lot of things can affect the weather, and it is different at locations that are relatively close together.

We would like to thank Robert Goettsch for his help. Yes, we would do another project. It was fun!
